By Greg Andersen, Iowa State Director
Iowa started the Tri-State UFO Study Group along with Missouri and Illinois. Adding Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, it became the Midwest UFO Network in 1969. Thus, the start of something bigger as more states were added and the name was changed to the Mutual UFO Network in 1973 with Harald Cowdin as the first Iowa state director.
In 1975 the MUFON Symposium was hosted in Des Moines, Iowa. The speakers included David Jacobs, Sherman Larsen, Leo Sprinkle, Ted Bloecher and James McCampbell with papers submitted by Jacque Vallee and Ted Phillips.

Some Notable UFO events in Iowa:
Iowa Multiple UFO Triangles – MUFON Case 71566
On September 27, 2015 at around 9:30 PM in Britt, Iowa multiple witnesses at two locations were watching the Blood Moon eclipse. The witnesses saw several triangular shaped UFO’s moving across the sky and sitting in one location. This went on for several hours until the witnesses finally went to bed. It is estimated that they saw up to 14 craft. The witnesses described the objects as being triangular shaped but slightly curved. They said that the visible surface of the craft was dark in appearance, but the object had a flashing, alternating red/green light coming from somewhere underneath. In addition, the object had a white light on each of the three corners. None of the triangles made any sound.
Iowa in the last ten years has had several triangular UFO cases and the epicenter seems to be south of Des Moines along Interstate 35.
UFO at Big Lake Park
On the evening of December, 17 1977 in Council Bluffs, Iowa witnesses saw a glowing red ball falling toward Big Lake Park. It hit the ground in the vicinity of Gilberts Pond in Big Lake Park, across the Missouri River from Eppley Airfield. When onlookers arrived at the impact point on a small levee, they found a 4x6 foot mass of molten, red-orange metal covering the frozen ground, about 16 ft. from the road. Some of the witnesses saw a craft hovering above at the same time as the incident. This case is one of ten highlighted by Jacque Vallee as examples of physical evidence from a UFO.

The photo above is a sample in my possession and was gathered from the site by two previous Nebraska MUFON members. The photo below is the results of a thermite test done by Netflix on their ‘Investigation Alien‘ series. During this series a new witness came forward named Darrel Levengood and said that he and some of his buddies were given two thermite welders used by the railroad to fix tracks. They said that they were the ones responsible for the incident.
Although the test and the description of the incident were very similar, Garry Nolan’s analysis of the Council Bluffs sample did not show any aluminum oxide in which a thermite reaction would create, only aluminum. Also, the amount of material was far larger in the Council Bluffs incident than the Netflix test. I have continued trying to contact this new witness but have not been successful. So, the answer to this sighting is still up for debate.
